Our Work

Protecting the restoration investment and sustaining the tern colony are critical for the recovery of these species and the protection of our natural heritage. Sustaining the tern populations on GGI requires a commitment to stewardship, and that stewardship must be strategic. Our conservation plan helps ensure that we are responding to the top priority threats facing the long-term viability of terns breeding on GGI and that those responses benefit the sustainability of the colony. Our vision is that tern habitat is sustained and tern populations thrive on GGI and continue to serve as a source population for breeding terns in the western North Atlantic.

Given the hemispheric importance of the colony, it is critical that tern conservation on GGI uses a science-based approach and follows an explicit conservation action plan. This plan sets a strategic roadmap to address the threats to the colony and the management, restoration, research, and monitoring actions needed.
